Not All Tattoo Removal Has to Mean “Blank Skin”

When most people think about tattoo removal, they picture completely erasing a tattoo until nothing’s left. But here’s the truth: not every tattoo needs to disappear entirely. For many people, fading a tattoo just enough for a cover-up is faster, cheaper, and the smarter choice.

So how do you know whether to aim for a fade or commit to full removal? Let’s break it down.

What is a Tattoo Fade?

A fade is exactly what it sounds like—lightening a tattoo to the point where another artist can tattoo over it successfully. Think of it like creating a clean canvas, without having to strip it back to bare skin.

  • Usually takes 2–4 sessions (vs. 4–8+ for full removal)

  • More affordable since you’ll need fewer sessions

  • Gives your artist freedom to design without fighting heavy, dark ink

At Reth-Ink, we often recommend fading when a client already knows they want a cover-up at GRIM Studios.

What is Full Removal?

Full removal means taking your tattoo down as close to invisible as possible. While no clinic can guarantee 100% erasure, today’s picosecond lasers come close—especially for black and dark inks.

  • Usually takes 4–8 sessions, depending on tattoo size and color

  • Ideal if you want truly bare skin, not another tattoo in its place

  • Best option if the tattoo carries painful memories and you don’t want a trace left

When to Choose a Fade

  • You’re ready for a cover-up tattoo and don’t want the old ink competing with the new design

  • You’re working with an artist who has a vision but needs lighter skin tones to pull it off

  • You want to save money and time, since fewer sessions are needed

When to Choose Full Removal

  • You’re not planning to re-tattoo the area

  • The tattoo is tied to trauma or regret and you don’t want any reminder of it

  • You need completely clear skin for personal or professional reasons

Cost & Time Comparison

  • Fade: 2–4 sessions, spaced 6–8 weeks apart. Affordable and efficient.

  • Full Removal: 4–8 sessions, spaced 6–8 weeks apart. More investment, but the cleanest result.

At Reth-Ink, we’ll give you a personalized estimate after your consultation so you know exactly what to expect.

Pro Tip: You Don’t Have to Decide Right Away

Sometimes clients start with fading in mind, then realize they want full removal. Or they aim for full removal but decide they’re happy with a lighter fade. The process is flexible—you can adjust as your feelings change.

Ready to Decide?

Whether you’re looking for a clean slate or just a lighter canvas for something new, we’ll help you figure out the best plan for your tattoo, your timeline, and your budget.
